Mood

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder involves extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These episodes can last days or weeks and significantly impact sleep, energy, behaviour, and judgement. Between episodes, many people with bipolar disorder lead full and productive lives.

There are several types of bipolar disorder. Bipolar I involves full manic episodes that may require hospitalisation. Bipolar II involves milder hypomanic episodes but more frequent and severe depression. Cyclothymia involves milder mood fluctuations over a longer period.

At Nafs Wellcare, our psychiatrists specialise in bipolar disorder treatment. Medication is typically the cornerstone of treatment, with mood stabilisers like lithium or lamotrigine being first-line options. We combine medication with psychoeducation — helping you recognise early warning signs of mood episodes — and therapy to manage the impact of the condition on your life and relationships.

Signs & Symptoms

Everyone experiences these differently. You don't need to have all of them to seek help.

Manic episodes: elevated mood, increased energy, reduced need for sleep, racing thoughts, grandiosity, impulsive behaviour
Depressive episodes: low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, suicidal thoughts
Mixed episodes: symptoms of both mania and depression simultaneously
Hypomanic episodes: milder version of mania that doesn't cause significant impairment
